Ever since Murs started dropping solo LPs back in the late ’90s (beginning with F’Real in ’97), he’s adhered strictly to a “record, release, tour, repeat” lifestyle/work-style regimen, with very few free windows in which to pause, chill and refl ect on all that he’s accomplished. And that’s fine ’cause he’s nothing if not a workaholic, and momentum lost can certainly be a challenging thing to rev back up. But, for anyone with a penchant for pondering, there’s no question that Murs is currently at the single most crucial crossroads in his entire rhyming-and-stealing career. He is halfway complete with that most-dreaded anti-underground achievement: the major-label debut.
And here it is...
“For all the fans that are gonna hate me [for signing to WB], go check the liner notes to Good Music,” says Murs, referring to his 1999 album. “I said that my goal was to sell 13 million records. And I thought for the longest time it was gonna be me releasing 30 albums and selling 500,000 of each. But now I have the chance to be on MTV, and motherfucker, I’m gonna take it. But I’m bringing all of you with me. Everybody who’s supported me for the past 10 years, we are going to MTV. That’s why it’s Murs For President ’cause if I have to play politics with this bullshit industry, I’m going to be the motherfucking president. I’m not gonna be a senator. I’m not gonna be in the House of Representatives.”
